Natural gas does contribute to carbon emissions, but not nearly as much as coal or oil. In addition, natural gas results in methane being released into the atmosphere which is a greenhouse gas. It should be noted that methane is not as harmful as CO2 and that the majority of methane in the atmosphere is the result of various animals and bacteria.
Some scientists expect reliance on natural gas to increase in the near future, increasing the burden that natural gas may place on the environment.
