It is lower-emissions than most fossil fuels, however the mining process by which it is extracted is quite detrimental. The practice, known as “Hydro-fracking” or “hydro-fracturing” is the practice of injecting fluids into rock formations underground to crack them open, so that the natural gas stores will be released for collection. This pollutes groundwater, and puts dangerous chemicals into the soil. Also, even though it burns cleaner than most fuels, burning natural gas still creates significant emissions and releases many pollutants.
Only some natural gas reservoirs, mostly those that are in tight formations and the new shale gas plays, undergo fracking to stimulate gas production. Abundant natural gas production is established with a simple well.
