Three instruments that can detect wind speed and direction are wind socks, sonic anemometers, and digital weather instruments such as the Merlin.
Wind socks fill up with air and point in the direction the wind is blowing. You can also tell how fast the wind is blowing by noticing the shape and movement of the wind sock. Sonic Anemometers can detect the speed and direction of the wind by measuring the speed of sound waves influenced by wind. Digital weather instruments such as the Merlin display digitalized recordings of wind speed and direction. They contain wind speed and direction sensors which help calculate wind measurements.
