The first level consists of primary consumers that eat only plants, also known as herbivores. An example of a primary consumer is a grasshopper. Secondary consumers prey upon primary consumers and are often called carnivores. Tertiary consumers are carnivores that eat secondary consumers. A complete example food chain would be: a primary consumer (grasshopper) is eaten by a secondary consumer (frog) which is then eaten by a tertiary consumer (hawk).
