Is the naked mole rat a mole or a rat?

It’s neither. Mole rats are their own species, and they’re more closely related to guinea pigs, porcupines, and chinchillas than they are rats or moles. They’re social structure is unique in the mammalian world because they live like bees: one queen and many workers, all working towards the good of their large colony. This is called being eusocial. Naked mole rats and the Damaraland mole rats are the only mole rats, in fact the only mammals, that live like this.
