My vet recommends eventually releasing my red-eared slider turtles into a pond when they’re big enough. Would this disrupt the ecosystem?

Releasing pet animals into the wild is never a good idea. The introduced animals compete with the native species and can introduce new diseases to the native species.

Depending on the climate, some people like to keep their pet turtles in pond enclosures in their yard. This can be done with the time and effort to set up the enclosure properly with care being taken to ensure the turtle cannot leave the yard and get into any nearby wetlands.
