My lilac tree is covered in a green/grey fungus. What can I spray or paint this with to remove.

It could be infected with powdery mildew. This is pretty common in lilac bushes. I’d ask an expert for better advice on this since you didn’t include a picture of what your bush looked like.

To get rid of powdery mildew, you will have to remove the infected parts. You could also use a fungicide to remove it, but make sure the fungicide you use is specific to the plant you are using it on. Don’t plant young lilac bushes since they are more prone to infection. Improve air circulation around the plant by pruning it.
