My dad recently tried to tell me that wolves once lived everywhere in North and South America; I thought they just lived in Yellowstone?

I know parents are never supposed to be right, but in this case your dad is correct! Wolves did in fact live all over North and South America. Very few populations of gray wolves survive today, but thanks to reintroduction efforts they are starting to come back. The endangered red wolf lives in North Carolina, having been driven to extinction and then reintroduced. And though a distant relative of gray and red wolves, the maned wolf continues to live in South America.
