I have a feeling it was something called Sudden Oak Death, or SOD. It’s due to a fungus like organism which can infect your tree for over a year before dealing a sudden and swift death, and is transferable from tree to tree. There are however, other causes that are similar, like Oat Wilt, Oak Decline, and a plethora of burrowing bugs which kill trees very quickly. The links have some great info, so you can see if any of the symptoms match up.
