Is the Muni an eco-friendly mode of transportation?

The most important thing about the Muni (San Francisco’s Municipal Transit agency) is that it is a form of public transportation which is always a great, eco-friendly alternative to commuting in your personal vehicle, unless it’s a bike.  According to the site, the buses are run on diesel, its trolleys are electric and its vehicles use alternative fuels, all of which are slightly better for the environment than running on pure gasoline.  This does not mean Muni doesn’t contribute to the huge emissions that the transportation sector emit in the United States; electric vehicles need electricity that is usually created by burning fossil fuels, and diesel is certainly not without fault, but again, public transportation is always good and it looks like Muni is making an effort to be environmentally friendly.
