Both the mountain lion (cougar) and the panther both belong to the family “Felidae.” However, cougars belong to the SUBfamily Felinae, and panthers to Pantherinae.
The mountain lion along with all other cats (wild or domestic, big and small) belong to the family Felidae. There is no single animal called panther as the name is commonly used to refer to several cats, including the leopard, the jaguar, and the mountain lion itself. There is, however, a genus of cats called Panthera, which includes the lion, the tiger, the jaguar, and the leopard. The mountain lion, on the other hand, belongs to the genus Puma.
