Fresh produce refers to items that come directly from orchards or farms. If fruit were to be placed in a freezer, the expansion of the moisture inside may cause some types of fruit or vegetable to burst, or they would at least turn brown. Have you ever put a banana in the refrigerator? They turn brown in no time at all. If you live in an area that has orchards or farms, you may notice that if the temperature dips too low in spring, it could ruin fields of produce!
Most grocery stores will indicate the process that their foods have been through before getting to their stores. To be sure that you get fruits that are at their freshest buy fruits that grow near where you live. Even shopping at stores such as Whole Foods can ensure the best quality and freshness.
