The two work in conjunction. Plants are needed to capture carbon and place it in the soil in the first place. At the same time, soil takes up much more biomass than plants, so ultimately, if the carbon is buried underground after the tree dies – because the tree utilizing carbon during its life-cycle- soil stands to store more carbon.
