Is more plastic used to make water bottles in America or plastic grocery bags?

The US goes through roughly 100 billion plastic shopping bags alone (the number stands at over 380 billion when you start counting plastic sacks and wrappings) each year.  In 2006, Americans consumed over 31.2 billion gallons of bottled water, most of which was sold in polyethylene terephthalate bottles.  It took about 900,000 pounds of this kind of plastic to make the bottles.
