$131.4 billion is spent on alcohol in the US each year.
About $82 billion is spent on cigarettes.
Although smoking is a wide-spread habit, alcohol is more likely to be consumed by more people because of parties and celebrations. It also takes longer to get addicted to. Overall, the alcohol industry pulls in more, with an annual cost of $166 billion. Smoking comes in a close second, with $157 billion spent each year. (These figures include the total money spent or lost as a result of medical bills and lost company time because of sick days taken.)
