Is biomass more environmentally friendly than coal?

Yes, biomass is more environmentally friendly than coal.  It is a bit of a tricky question because both biomass and coal produce green house gases when used to create energy, but the gases released from biomass is not seen as new gases, whereas coal is.  Because biomass comes from plant matter, that has absorbed CO2 that has already been created, it is not seen as a new amount of CO2 being release.  You can think of it as having been stored in the plant.  On the other hand, when coal is fired, it releases a new amount of CO2 and therefore is adding to green house gases in our atmosphere.
