More energy is spent making a computer than using one.  It’s essential to understand that energy is not only needed to power your machine, but more of it is required to create the machine.  However, since life without computers is no longer possible, a person can make an extra effort to keep their computer running for as long as possible.  The best way to lower one’s computing carbon footprint is to ensure one’s computer health by not weighing down the computer by too many extra applications or by taking the computer to a repair shop for fixtures (instead of buying a new computer).  And if an upgrade is unavoidable look into computers that are designed specifically for efficiency. Lastly, laptops will always be more efficient than desktops because are designed to run on battery power
