Is mining for precious metals pretty similar?

The mining processes for gold and silver have quite a bit of overlap; generally, both industries focus on bringing gold/silver ore from underground up to the surface so that it may later be refined and produced for commercial use.  Silver is significantly less valuable than gold, however, so a lot of silver mining done these days is often a byproduct of gold/copper/lead mining.
