Methane is indeed a greenhouse gas. It can remain in the atmosphere anywhere from 9 to 15 years, and is over 20 times more effective at trapping heat than carbon dioxide. There are several anthropogenic sources of methane gas, including landfills, agriculture, coal mining, and various other industrial activities.
