Is mercury the worst byproduct from burning fossil fuels?

It’s hard to point out a single worst effect. Not only are there emissions of other heavy metals besides mercury, you also need to deal with volatile organic compounds (VOCs), sulfur and nitrogen oxides that cause acid rain, and carbon oxides that cause global warming. Acid rain can damage or kill animals (including humans), plants, microbes, and other organisms in water or soil as well as on the surface. It can also damage buildings and other structures made of materials rich in calcium carbonate. The effects of global warming are too numerous to name here and, although they take longer time, are potentially much more devastating.
