The meat will not make you sick, but it will not taste nor look very good. When salmon spawn, they travel for long distances, sometimes thousands of miles, to return to the ground where they were born, so that they may themselves spawn. This means they are starving and literally near death, as their life cycle dictates they will perish not long after spawning. Their bodies are malnourished, and because the appetizing pink hue comes from their diet, their skin may be pale. Furthermore, the rich, thick texture of the meat may instead be mushy and malformed.
