Lol. And this is “green” … how?

First, understand that this is one of the more important poetic works in history.

You can pretty much get an overview of the literal meaning and text interpretations by reading the Wikipedia article, the hyperlinks, and also skimming the references.

What you don’t get is the full sense of how the Rubaiyat is important. It’s had a major, enduring cultural importance. Even though it was written 1000 years ago, it’s so well known and appreciated that one of the Rocky & Bullwinkle cartoon chapters is written making a joke about it. And just take a look at the number of translations of it that Wikipedia considers “important”!

Part of the key to this is, as Wikipedia wisely notes is: “The nature of a translation very much depends on what interpretation one places on Khayyam’s philosophy.”

I.e., many have seen importance to them in the Rubiayat over the centuries. And to quote Omar:

The moving finger writes; and, having writ,

Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit

Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,

Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.
