The Mako Shark is listed as a threatened species; it’s not quite considered endangered but is vulnerable. The recent capture of 748 pound Mako is at the heart of some controversy in Florida as of yesterday.
There are two species of mako shark, the Longfin Mako and Shortfin Mako. According to the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature), both species appear on their red list of threatened animals. The Shortfin Mako is listed as Low Risk/Threatened with an unknown population and the Longfin Mako is listed as vulnerable with a decreasing population as of October 2009.
