The production of biofuel materials is akin to industrial agriculture. In the US, most of the biofuels are made from soybeans. Vast tracts of pristine land and wildlife habitats are converted into farmlands. Deforestation is common in developing countries producing biofuels. Immense amounts of water, fertilizers and pesticides are used to grow the soybeans. Agricultural runoff pollutes rivers, lakes and oceans. The manufacturing process of biofuels is probably cleaner than that of conventional gasoline. Biofuels made from recycled cooking and vegetable oil may be less energy and resource intensive.
