To make truly clean coal do we need to change our mining practices?

There is a lot of controversy surrounding the idea of “clean coal”, and usually it refers to making less of an impact on the environment during the process of energy production from coal.  From a broader perspective, in order to “clean” the whole process, mining practices would need to be aimed at having no environmental impact.  Whether or not you believe “clean coal technologies” are real and beneficial does not change the fact that coal is a fossil fuel, and its supply is limited.  If we remain dependent on coal, the mining processes will need to become increasingly invasive in the search for new mines.  In terms of perpetuation, coal by any name is not a reliable source of energy.
