looking for a small tree to trim to an umbrella shape, it will be planted about 8 ft from the foundation and have western exposure. the area is south Macomb county, Michigan

    Your best bet would be to get a native to the area tree. These will usually do the best, and if there are any local nurseries, then you can talk to them. Some examples would Black Ash, Box Elder, or a Northern White Cedar. They’re all less than 20 feet, usually, and should do fine as they’re all indigenous. But again, a local nursery would be of great help in your quest.
