Is the life of a squirrel more valuable than the life of a thousand-year old tree?

Choosing between an old-growth tree and any other organism is a difficult choice, and often controversial. One reason ancient trees are so valuable left standing is because they cannot simply be replanted. Once an area is logged, the rich diversity of the land is gone and won’t likely return–it takes centuries for a forest to mature. Because any 1000 year old tree is home to many animals, choosing between a squirrel and a tree may be a false choice. It is often posited in the media as a choice between trees and people–again a false choice, since humans require oxygen to breathe and trees are a primary source of it.
