Two large tsunamis hit the Aleutian Islands of Alaska in the last 70 years. In 1946 an earthquake measuring 7.8 caused a wave 35 meters high. Another large quake, this time 8.3 on the Richter Scale, occurred near the island chain in 1957. There were no lives lost, but damage to island of Kauai was substantial. There have been many tsunamis in recent years, occuring as recently as 1998, 1999 and 2001.
