The carbon cycle is a complex balance of the transference and conversion of CO2 between various parts of the planet. CO2 is emitted by organisms into the atmosphere, and is then being converted into oxygen by plants. However, much more carbon is being emitted into the atmosphere than can be transferred or converted to retain a healthy balance in the carbon cycle, tipping it in one direction. The ocean is absorbing an extra 2.5 gigatons of carbon per year from the atmosphere than it can manage, and the atmosphere’s store is increasing by 6.1 gigatons from industry each year.
