Yes, John Chapman (known as Johnny Appleseed) was born on September 26, 1774, in Leominster, Massachusetts. He is most known for planting apple nurseries in Ohio and Pennsylvania and for his non-violent philosophy.
According to The Straight Dope, John Chapman (aka Johnny Appleseed) planted “over a hundred thousand square miles of apple orchards” between Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana. John Chapman was said to be an eccentric vegetarian who traveled on barefoot, made friends with Indians, and showed kindness to animals. The majority of the apples that John Chapman produced were probably used not for food, but for making cider, which at the time was a safer and more popular alternative to other types of alcohol (i.e. corn liquor).
