I’ve heard that cremation is good for conserving land, but how much energy does it take?

It takes about 220 pounds of wood to cremate the average human body, because the fire required must burn so hot. According to one figure, based on the annual death rate and the number of people in the world who would likely choose cremation, around 18 million cremations a year means a total energy value of 30 million gigajoules. Because practices differ (fuel used, etc.) it is very difficult to estimate the energy cost of cremation.
