Is it true that placing fruit so that it is touching a banana helps it to ripen more quickly?

I’ve heard this works for avocados. If so, does it work for any other fruits?

Yep!  Ethylene gas, C2H4, is naturally emitted from bananas and many other fruits and vegetables that causes the food to ripen.  The fruits do not need to be touching, in fact, they can be placed in a paper bag alone and still ripen more rapidly than if sitting on a shelf.  Some foods have a very high Ethylene gas content: apples, peaches, pears and passion fruit. While others have a very low content: citrus and many greens.

Wow, I sort of thought it might be an urban legend. That is very interesting that it is, indeed, true. Thanks ecolizzie!
