According to a study conducted at the University of Kentucky’s College of Agriculture, goats and cows can in fact be raised in the same pasture, but there are pros and cons. In this study cows grazed on land after goats had first fed there gained on average 30 lbs less than did those that shared pasture with goats. In the first case the cows were doing “clean-up” grazing, whereas in the second the goats pretty much fed on whatever the cows wouldn’t touch. In fact, a benefit was the weed control provided by the goats. However, one impediment to shared pastures may be the expense of the different fencing required for goats.
