They did not actually use tulips as currency, though the barter system was popular, and tulips were valuable.
If tulips could be used like money, it would be terrible for nature. Can you imagine how many gardens would be destroyed? Also, people would turn wild land into tulip fields, and a lack of biodiversity is no good for nature.
