Depending on the type of CFL bulb you use, the problem may be that frequent on-and-off switching can sometimes shorten the lifespan of a CFL. The Energy Star web site recommends that you leave a CFL light on for up to 15 minutes rather than switching it off and on again, in order to maximize the lifespan of the bulb. In other words, if you are stepping out of the room for only five or ten minutes, leave the light on. If it will be more than fifteen minutes before you return and need the light again, switch it off and turn it back on when you come back. This should help your bulbs to last longer.
