Is it safe to plant a fruit tree next to an asphalt driveway? Will the fruit be safe to eat?

As far as I can tell, the primary concern will be potential damage to your driveway, not the health of your plant. If you are planting near asphalt, brick, or other man made surface, it is best to pick tress with vertically growing roots as opposed to horizontal ones that can threaten the integrity of your asphalt surface. The link below contains a list of such trees. Your local plant nursery will also be able to help you find a suitable tree for your space.

Also, it is important to make sure your tree is planted in such a way that it will not make contact with power lines. This is particularly important if you live in an area that is prone to lightning and other inclement weather.
