As is, the safety of the Smart car is questionable. Other safety tests have been performed on cars much bigger than the Smart car (yet smaller than an average sedan) and have yielded low marks. The momentum of a car larger than the Smart car (or even an SUV) would do significant damage regardless of safety features. The smaller car you build, the less safe it is going to be. It’s physics.
Any small car would be safe if most automobiles on the road were small. Smaller cars are becoming much more popular recently with rise in gas prices. Also the BP problem has added to this momentum. Nevertheless, cars can be safe, even the tiny ones, if everybody else had them. This will happen in the future.
