Is it possible for NASA to grow fruits and vegetables on spaceships?

Yes, and some are trying to do just that. Strawberries are one crop recommended for flights, since they are small and low-maintenance, and could be grown in small hydroponic units aboard the ships. The first crops to be grown, according to NASA, will be little greenhouse plants like lettuce and tomatoes. The little gardens will not only provide a source of fresh produce, but will give off oxygen and be a source of entertainment/happiness for the astronauts. One thing scientists still have to figure out is how to keep the plants from working so hard under low pressure.
