To be truly sustainable a car must not use more in resources (either in manufacturing or operation) than it returns to the environment, or else not use resources faster than they are naturally produced in the environment. Based on that definition it is pretty much impossible for any car to be sustainable. Even if it ran on water and produced zero emissions, building a new car requires metals, paints, and numerous chemicals which must eventually be disposed of once the car is retired.
