Is it possible to build a carbon-absorbing material into highways?

If it were, it would be disastrous to your tires. Tires contain carbon– that’s what makes them black. The carbon is added to the rubber because without it, they’d basically be giant pencil erasers, and they’d rub themselves out as you drove.

If highways absorbed the carbon out of your tires, anyone who drove on them would constantly be having flats. This is also why tire fires are so bad for the environment– they release about as much carbon as coal.
