There are problems with using genetically-modified organisms for any application, not just paper processing. Critics claim that genetic modification is a form of unethical meddling in biological processes. Some groups are concerned with the ability of modern science to full comprehend the effects of gene manipulation. Even in non-agricultural applications, genetically-modified organisms can potentially enter the food chain if they come into contact with a local ecosystem. Many counties in the U.S., particularly California, are banning the use of genetically-modified organisms in agriculture.
