Most of the time, there is no need to wash your clothes in hot water. To remove greasy stains or other particularly troublesome dirty spots, hot water might be needed; unless clothes are stained in this way however, washing in cold water should do the job just fine. In fact, it’s actually bad for some fabrics to always wash them in hot water – turning the setting to cold can help preserve the color and durability of your clothes longer. Finally, of course, washing without hot water is also much better for the planet. Between eighty and ninety percent of the energy consumed by most washing machines is used just to heat water.
