Is it important to distinguish the watershed of a stream?

On the EPA’s website there is a great definition of a watershed as stated by John Wesley Powell. He said a watershed is “that area of land, a bounded hydrologic system, within which all living things are inextricably linked by their common water course and where, as humans settled, simple logic demanded that they become part of a community.” As humans we have a huge impact on what flows from a watershed into a common water source, like a river or stream. Understanding watershed dynamics can help us avoid toxins and pollution from getting into a common water source shared by humans and other animals alike.
