Yes it is illegal. A violation of the endangered species act in the United States can cost you up to $50,000 and a year in jail. Civil penalties may also be assessed and added onto this total. The only time you are allowed to kill an endangered species is if there is preponderance of evidence that suggests that the animal was killed only for self defense.
