Yes, it is illegal to keep a hummingbirds as a pet.It is protected by the migratory bird law. In the past, some serious naturalists such as John Gould tried to keep them in order to study them. All efforts failed.Today, we do have have Aviaries with a natural habitat that insures the safety of the hummingbirds. a hummingbird will not live live in captivity. It needs much more than nectar to survive. It will die. Please not not try to keep a hummingbird as a pet.Besides breaking the law, you will kill the bird.
