There are bans in many countries regarding the consumption of endangered turtles such as the sea turtle, but turtles such as red eared sliders, are legal to eat in most countries.
In America it is illegal to catch and eat any of the species of threatened or endangered sea turtle. There are many countries, especially in Central America and Southeast Asia, where turtle meat and eggs are still consumed regularly. The cultural and religious significance of the animal is generally the reason that hunting is still allowed in these areas, despite their dwindling population numbers. Turtle soup is the most common food involving turtles, but eggs can be eaten as well. The most common species of turtle to be consumed is the Green Sea Turtle. Some countries, such as Costa Rica, allow limited harvest of the animals, but that has been difficult to control.
