Depending on the jurisdiction, the devocalization of animals may or may not be illegal. While devocalization is prohibited throughout the United Kingdom, in the United States, the laws vary from state to state.
Currently, debarking, the term referred to the devocalization of a dog, is illegal in Massachusettes thanks to the Animal Law Coalition, who had drafted a bill to ban this inhumane procedure. Debarking is also outlawed in Ohio, with the exception of “vicious” dogs.
Devocalization is not yet illegal in MA!! It will only be so if House Bill 344 passes this legislative session. And it will protect dogs and cats (yes, cats are devocalized too) only if the state’s breeding and veterinary associations, which include members who profit from devocalization, don’t successfully introduce loophole language. Urge your MA State (Beacon Hill) Rep and Senator to pass An Act Prohibiting Devocalization, House Bill 344, as written. To find them: http://www.wheredoivotema.com, record your address and find your “Rep and Senate in General Court.”
Whether you live in MA or not, learn about devocalization:
Do Animal lovers look at it as animal cruelty like de-clawing a cat?
