It depends on the country of which you are currently a resident. For example, in the United States, ivory collected before 1989 is still allowed to be bought and sold. However, any ivory collected after that date is deemed illegal and cannot be purchased without violating federal law.
Other countries, such as Vietnam and Thailand have similar laws. However, since it is very difficult to be sure the ivory you wish to purchase was collected legally, most recommendations are to skip buying ivory altogether.
