Heating up the oven to cook something requires a lot of energy. To self-clean, the oven heats up to even hotter temperatures in order to burn of food residue. In order to run a greener household, don’t self-clean the oven too frequently, and, when you do, self-clean right after you’ve cooked something, so that the oven is already hot and doesn’t have to heat up from room temperature to self-clean. This will save a bit of energy.
