Is it common for sharks to follow boats?

I ask this because I have a friend who was fishing with his grandfather who used to be a commercial fishing boat captain and an extremely large great white started swimming by them so they started up the motor and drove for a few miles. A few minutes later the shark showed up again.

It is possible the shark was able to smell a tiny trace of fish blood on the boat.  Or if the shark is accustomed to getting a free meal from fishing boats in the area, it may have learned to come near boats.  Research has shown that sharks seem to be more attracted by the noises a distressed fish makes than by blood in the water, so it is possible that the fish they were catching did something to attract the shark.
